What the crane company will ask you

Have these answers ready and the quote comes back faster and closer to the final bill.

  1. What it is and what it weighs, plus anything it sits on. A spec sheet or a photo of the nameplate helps.
  2. Its size, and where it is now: on a truck, on the ground or on a roof.
  3. Where it has to go: how high, and how far from where the truck can park. That distance is the reach.
  4. Where the truck can park: street, driveway or lot, and whether the ground is firm and level for the outriggers.
  5. Anything overhead: power lines, trees, roof edges and signs.
  6. The date and time, and whether the lift has to be early or on a weekend.
  7. Who rigs the load and who signals, your crew or theirs.
  8. Street permit: if the truck has to sit in the street, who pulls it.

Questions

How much does a crane cost to set trusses?

HomeGuide puts crane and equipment for truss setting at $200 to $700 a day, plus $40 to $60 a truss for labor. Boom trucks with an operator run $155 to $225 an hour on published 2025 rate sheets, with 3 or 4 hour minimums.

Can you set trusses without a crane?

Short, low-pitch trusses can go up by hand. A truss longer than 30 feet with a pitch steeper than 5/12 is probably too big to lift by hand, and a crane makes the job safer and faster.

How long does it take to set trusses with a crane?

A few hours to a day for a typical house or garage with a three-person crew (HomeGuide). On one addition the crew set all the second-floor trusses within the crane's 3-hour minimum.

How much does a 40 ft truss weigh?

About 270 to 350 lb, by one builder's estimate. Weight depends on the design, pitch and lumber.
